| Cowboying for the Phillips family started in California.
Practical ranchers, horses have been part of our lifestyle for 5 generations.
Pictured here is "Gramps", grandson Bill Phillips and Dorothy Funderburg
(when she was a Phillips). My dad, Bill Phillips started cutting in
the mid 70's. Here he's on a Doc Bar filly at a cutting in 1976. Dad
went on to a successful career, getting to the finals of almost every
major cutting event in the 80's. |

I've got a little riding under my belt. I guess I really did
start before I could walk. Don't mind the English saddle. I don't
remember it, and I guess it didn't stick, because I wouldn't trade
saddles today.
I've worked with my dad all of my life. I haven't met many finer
horseman, and I have the greatest respect for what he's taught me.
It's the foundation of what I do with a horse. We also live in a
very small world, today, so learning new techniques and methods
is extremely accessible. There's no reason to ever stop and think,
"Well, that's it, I've got it all.". I hope to be a student of horsemanship
until I quit breathing. |

A balanced and well disciplined horse - the result of any good
program - should be inclined to be very practical, and capable
of a variety of events.
That's one of the great joys of the American Quarter Horse.
Versatility. A properly started baby with a solid performance
start understands stopping and turning... as well as trust.

Nothing gives me greater joy and pride than to see the equine tradition
continue in my family. Here's Cole, he's been running barrels and
is learning to work cattle, now. Between his pony "Jackrabbit", and
Fatboy, a 26 year old cutting gelding, he's learning by leaps and
bounds. Be on the lookout for him, he'll be beating us all in a few
more years... |
